Several years ago, Heather Smith, one of the Greenfield “lunch ladies” discovered that many students in the Greenfield Exempted Village School District depended greatly on the school to provide most of the warm and nutritious meals during their week. On the weekend, many of these same students didn’t have access to enough food and often returned to school on Monday morning hungry. This great need fueled the creation of a new program called “Blessings in a Bag.” These weekend food bags contain enough food for students to receive adequate nutrition to get them through the weekend. First Presbyterian Church currently provides just over 400 weekend food bags to Greenfield Elementary & Buckskin Elementary each month. Rainsboro Elementary receives weekend food assistance from another source. Many community groups volunteer to fill Blessings in a Bag each month and many generous donors from all across Greenfield (and beyond) provide the nearly $1,300 per month to purchase the food.
Our missions committee also sponsors a community back to school bash each summer, just before the new school-year begins. At this event, students receive backpacks filled with age-appropriate school supplies. Many businesses, clubs, organizations, churches, and individuals generously donate the needed school supplies and finances to make this community outreach successful. Last year, we distributed over 400 backpacks.
Every year, we celebrate Thanksgiving by coming together as a Church body to cook, serve, package, and deliver fresh turkey meals all around Greenfield! We typically serve around 600-700 meals every year! This is totally free and you can reserve your meal by calling the church office.
Typically, the Sunday after Thanksgiving we hold the Kids For Christ Christmas Auction. The money raised at this auction is used to purchase Christmas presents for around 20 children in the Greenfield School District. The following weekend the kids, and their parents go shopping to purchase the presents and then return to the church to wrap them.
